Catford

Conversion of disused space into community Library

Contract Value: £400,000

Project Duration: 16 weeks

Under a traditional JCT contract, we transformed a former Argos store in Catford centre into a new community library, as per the Council's design scheme. Challenges included addressing damp issues within the existing structure, requiring early surveys and damp treatment to ensure compliance with building regulations. Restricted access posed logistical hurdles, with deliveries restricted to early mornings and extensive hoarding required for the safety of the public still attending other shops. The project aimed for an industrial aesthetic due to budget constraints, necessitating meticulous attention to services as they would be exposed to library users. Full DDA accessibility was ensured to serve the entire community, with function rooms created for community groups. Monthly progress meetings kept the council informed, maintaining transparency with the public. Despite budgetary constraints, cost-effective measures like the industrial finish were implemented, along with modern borrowing systems, to deliver a functional and accessible community space.
